What's Different?

A major difference in approach.
(See below)

15 Gospel stories about the one who dramatically changed the course of human history and who inspires us to follow in his steps.

Our main question is:

"How does walking with Jesus in various settings make us better, more responsible people (both individually and corporately), not only in our churches, but as we seek to make valuable contributions to the human race?"

This course demonstrates:

  • how we are intended to make responsible and valuable contributions to the human race in areas like values, ethics, morals, and the like. Although not specifically about politics, business, or current major social agendas, this class will address issues that directly impact all of those areas and more.
  • how to read the Gospels first and foremost as ancient documents of faith that address very specific issues of some for the earliest Christians in the history of the world. Serious literary questions will be addressed that are usually left out of more general or "popular" readings of the Gospels.
  • a truly fresh approach to the stories of Jesus. In some cases, the Greek text may be placed alongside current English translations (or even a new and fresh translation) to help understanding.

Gospel Comparisons

Here are the stories we'll read together.

This will not be a typical approach to the Gospels.

Rather, it will be a
Conversational Approach.
We will model how to (and how not to)
compare numerous texts from the 4 Gospels.

We will emphasize
responsible, contextual, and conversational concerns.

What's different about this course?

This will be a Conversational Approach to the Gospels. We will be comparing many texts from the 4 Gospels in a responsible and contextual manner.

Typical approaches to the Gospels in churches, study groups, and even some academic settings mix the Gospels together, as if pouring them out of a blender.

One of the key elements of this course will be to show how to read the Gospels side-by-side while always respecting the context of each Gospel.

Whooo Should Take This Course?

  • Any adult wanting to be challenged and encouraged by a thoughtful walk through Gospel texts about Jesus.
  • Perfect for Private study or group study of any kind (small group, formal church class, whole church study, etc.)
  • Whether you are new to the Bible or a veteran Bible reader, does not matter.
  • You do not need to know Greek or have any special previous knowledge about the Bible.
  • This course will make an overt attempt to challenge you and to help you examine your own assumptions when reading the NT in general and the Gospels in particular.
  • The course is academically responsible, but it maintains a strong focus on faith and practical application.
  • This not a devotional approach.

This is a wise decision!

How will this course help you?

  1. Spirituality: Focus on the attitudes, actions, and teachings of Jesus.
  2. Dealing with Conflict : Discover principles for dealing with conflicts that won't go away.
  3. Conversation: Discover how applying PROBE (a new and powerful way to read biblical texts "in conversation") can put you into conversation with the Gospels in a way you may not have experienced before.
  4. Contextual Reading: See for yourself first-hand why Reading the Gospels both separately and together will open amazing doors of understanding the books you've read all of your life.
  5. Word Studies: See for yourself first-hand why doing focused word and phrase studies within each of the Gospels can point to themes that have been masked or hidden by more traditional approaches.
  6. Perspective: Watch Jesus in conversation with ancient prophetic texts (like Isaiah and Jeremiah), with his disciples, with religious leaders, and with God, and see how Jesus began a movement intended to impact the nature of the human race.
