What questions would YOU ask?
I'm Gary Collier, the director of IABC,
with my incredible granddaughter, Zoe.
You have signed up for a "5-Day Window" to think about the GOLD Bible Study TrackĀ that I've been telling you about.Ā
Starting tomorrow, I'll try to help you with that.
If I were the one checking out a potential "Bible study" for the first time, I would have a lot of questions.Ā Ā
I'd have many questions,Ā andĀ a few of them would rise to the top.Ā Ā
I myself would want to know
the following 5 things above all:
#1: Who's on first?
Who are the leaders of the group, and why should I want to listen to or be associated with them?
- Do I think I would have things to learn from them?
- Are they sponsored by or do they represent a particular church or denominational group or religious perspective?

#2: What's in it for me?
What does this group offer me that I don't have already?
- What kinds of things will I learn? Will I be allowed to participate? What if I just want to watch for a while, will that be OK? Do I have to write papers or give speeches or anything special like that?
- Since this is supposed to be a "Bible study," does it really focus on Biblical texts? Or is it a more general feel-good/shoot-the-breeze group?
- How is discussion handled? And in particular, disagreements? Do people argue a lot?
- Is it truly a study group? If so, will I need special qualifications to get in?
#3: Do you have paint swatches?
Are there sample classes and teaching I can watch so that I can evaluate them for myself?
- Who would repaint or remodel their house without looking at samples first?
- If I'm going to spend some of my precious time—and maybe some money—sitting down with others to study the Bible, I would at least like to sit in a class or two as a sample of "how things are done."
- I'd also like to know why some people who have already been their for a number of years have stayed. Has it helped them? How?

#4: Why is there a membership fee?
- Isn't Bible study supposed to be free?
- With all the free Bible studies online,
why would I choose to pay a membership fee for it? - Is it reasonable and fair? Should I only be looking for free Bible studies?
If not, what's a fair amount to consider? - How does this relate to "investment" in my own understanding?
Is that even a fair comparison
#5: What's the focus?
What is this group studying and what approach does it take?
- Does it focus on "hot topics" like most podcasts or small group Bible studies? Or does it focus on biblical texts themselves?
- What methods does it use? Is it mostly book-worm type of stuff? Is it primarily "churchy"? Or does it have a good balance between them?
- What are they working on now, and what's coming up next?
- What kind of access do I have to classes if I cannot attend LIVE? What more is available?

For me, these would be the 5 biggest questions I would ask.
Obviously, I'd have other questions, too.
So, during the next 5 days,
I'll take these questions in turn and address them.
I'll send them to you by email.
You might have additional questions.
Feel free to send them to me simply by replying to any of my emails.
I hope you have a good experience here. See you tomorrow.
