Areas of Teaching at IABC:

--Spiritual Formation

Education:

Ph.D. University of Texas at Austin,

B.S. Abilene Christian University

After earning my B.S. in chemistry/mathematics from Abilene Christian University, I began graduate studies at the University of Texas. Four years later, I completed all requirements and received the Ph.D. in biochemistry/biology.

Professional Career:

My professional career in clinical biochemistry entailed:

  • teaching of undergraduate, graduate, medical, and physician resident students,
  • research in diabetes, toxicology, therapeutic drug measurements and the behavioral effects of illicit drugs,
  • patient care through the analysis of blood and other specimen types in clinical and hospital laboratories, and
  • administration of a department of forty physicians/doctoral scientists.

I performed these activities at two major medical schools – the University of Missouri Medical Center and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. At the latter, I achieved the rank of Professor with Tenure and served as the Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology. During my professional career, I was elected President of the international, 11,000-member American Association of Clinical Chemistry and President of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. I have been recognized for outstanding service and teaching by the AACC, the NACB, and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Interest in Spiritual Formation:

Since my teenage years, I have maintained a keen interest in and devoted time to increasing my Biblical knowledge and understanding and have actively pursued personal spiritual development. Over the years, I have frequently taught Bible classes at all levels, delivered sermons, and served as a church leader. My observation that many who regularly attend church assemblies and participate in religious activities fail to grow in their faith led me to explore how spiritual formation occurs and how it can be encouraged. I completed the Growing Deeper Spiritually Program (GDSP) organized by the Zoe Group (later assumed by Lipscomb University, Nashville, Tennessee) and became a mentor to assist others who enrolled in the GDSP over the subsequent five years. I have taught the content of this program at multiple churches in the ensuing years.

Market Place Ministry:

Recently, my wife and I retired from our professional careers to start a marketplace ministry in Colorado Springs. Using a for-profit business, we support hundreds of non-profit organizations and causes. Our model of business as ministry has been well received in our community and has become an educational resource for university programs. I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Community Roundtable for local non-profit organizations. Through our affiliation with Harding University (Searcy, Arkansas), students are provided an internship in Colorado Springs which allows them “hands-on” experience in marketplace ministry.

Personal:

Finally, my wife and I have celebrated our 50th anniversary. We have been blessed with two wonderful daughters who have Godly families, including four grandchildren. We currently live in Colorado Springs among friends and family and seek to serve others through Kingdom work.
